Puzzling Pink Ooze on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Raises Anxiety of Possible Phytoplankton Proliferation

Authorities in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a secluded beach, with some scientists anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Extensive Appearance Across Coastline

The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a portion of a coastal area about 37 miles south of the city. A like substance has also been recorded on areas of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.

The expert stated the algae did not produce poisons similar to the organism involved in the previous severe event, but it does consume microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.

Addressing the media, the premier said he was did not know of any links between the algae outbreak and the aquaculture sector, stating scientific testing was required before conclusions could be made.

"We need to ensure our waterways are ecologically sound and viable," he remarked.

"Our coastal assets across Tasmania are our assets and we need to guarantee the public and our business sector can operate side-by-side to utilize our aquatic resources effectively and in a lasting way."
