Christopher Nolan's legendary action saga, The Odyssey, is a film audiences have been anticipating since its announcement. It firmly sits as one of the most awaited motion pictures coming next year. In a festive surprise, a preview has now been released, though it's hampered by YouTube's poor compression—perhaps explaining the director's choice to restrict the trailer solely for theatrical audiences. A First Glimpse of the Stellar Ensemble This first look showcases Matt Damon portraying Odysseus. We also see Tom Holland playing the son and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. In a poignant moment, the character pleads with Odysseus to promise his safe homecoming, only for him to look up and question what happens if he cannot. The trailer also offers a quick, obscured look at Polyphemus the Cyclops, whose flock are taken by the hero and his men on their treacherous voyage. Based upon a cornerstone in classic storytelling, The Odyssey chronicles the lengthy quest of the legendary King of Ithaca. Following his victory in the Trojan War, as told in Homer's Iliad, Odysseus endures a long and perilous road home. Legendary Obstacles and a Star-Studded Lineup On his travels, Odysseus confronts numerous obstacles and mythical beings. These include the enchantress Circe, who transforms men into swine, and the deceptive Sirens. Despite these trials, his sworn oath is to do whatever it takes to get back to his wife and son in Ithaca. The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Joining Damon, Holland, and Hathaway is Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, together with Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal. A Tale of Many Adaptations The classic poem has seen numerous adaptations throughout history. These range from modern retellings to a 1999 ballet. There has even been adapted into a musical called Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a nine-album collection. The official trailer was long awaited following the project's reveal and a short teaser clip which was initially shown only on the big screen. That teaser later made its way online shortly thereafter. To see a clearer version, the trailer posted on the film's official social channel may provide enhanced visual quality. The Odyssey is scheduled for release on global IMAX screens next summer.
